What Is Pardhan Mantri Jan Dhan 
Yojana Account (PMJDY)


Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is a National Mission on Financial Inclusion. The plan provides universal access to banking facilities with at least one basic banking account for every one.

PMJDY focuses on coverage of every one as against the earlier plan which have mainly focused on coverage of villages but It focuses on coverage of rural as well as urban areas.


Who is eligible to open Account under this scheme ?
Every one who is above the age of 10 years can open this account by submitting to bank the required documents as asked by the bank without paying any account opening fees to banks.

It should also be noted that every Individual can hold only one such account. It means that if any individual have already have account under this scheme then he can not open one more account in any bank.


How to Open Jan Dhan Account
Eligible persons can open Jan Dhan (PMJDY) Account in any bank whether it is public sector bank or private sector bank by submitting required documents provided they not have any other bank account under this scheme in any bank.


Balance to be maintained under PMJDY Account

Minimum Balance : NIL
Maximum Balance : Unlimited (For individuals who have done full KYC)


Facilities/ Features under Jan Dhan (PMJDY) Account
  • A Rupay Debit Card will be given free of cost (i.e without annual charges)
  • Overdraft facility (SBOD) upto Rs.10,000/- will be available to one account holder of PMJDY per household (preferably to lady member) after 6 months of satisfactory conduct of the account
  • Interest on deposit
  • Accidental insurance cover of Rs. 2 lakhs
  • No minimum balance required and maximum balance have no limit
  • The scheme provide life cover of Rs. 30,000/- payable on death of the beneficiary
  • Beneficiaries of Government Schemes will get Direct Benefit Transfer in these accounts.
  • Access to Pension, insurance products
  • The Claim under Personal Accidental Insurance under PMJDY shall be payable if the Rupay Card holder have performed minimum one successful financial or non-financial customer induced transaction within 90 days prior to date of accident including accident date will be included as eligible transactions under the Rupay Insurance Program 2019-2020

Can existing saving account can be converted into Jan Dhan (PMJDY) Account

If individuals already having a bank account with any bank then they not need to open a separate account under PMJDY, but banks will issue them a RuPay Card upon the request of account holder in his existing account and then they will get benefit of insurance.


Documents required under Jan Dhan (PMJDY) Account
  • Passport,
  • Driving licence,
  • Permanent Account Number (PAN) Card,
  • Voter’s Identity Card issued by Election Commission of India,
  • Job card issued by NREGA duly signed by an officer of the State Government,
  • letter issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India containing details of name, address and Aadhaar number, or
  • any other document as notified by the Central Government 


Further following documents shall be deemed to be officially valid documents :-
  • Identity card with applicant's Photograph issued by Central/State Government Departments, Statutory/Regulatory Authorities, Public Sector Undertakings, Scheduled Commercial Banks, and Public Financial Institutions
  • letter issued by a Gazetted officer, with a duly attested photograph of the person


Persons no having valid documents (Read Below)
:- 
Reserve Bank of India vide its Press Release dated 26.08.2014 has clarified as under :-
 
Those persons who do not have any of the ‘officially valid documents' can open "Small Accounts" with banks.

A "Small Account" can be opened on the basis of a self- attested photograph and putting his/her signatures or thumb print in the presence of an officials of the bank.

Such accounts have limitations as below :-
  1. Aggregate credits : Shall not more than Rupees one lac in a year 
  2. Aggregate withdrawals : Shall not more than Rupees ten thousand in a month and
  3. Balance in the accounts : Shall not more than 50000/- at any point of time
These accounts would be valid normally for a period of twelve months. Thereafter, such accounts would be allowed to continue for a further period of twelve more months, if the account-holder provides a document showing that he/she already applied for Officially Valid Document, within 12 months of opening the small account.


Can Jan Dhan (PMJDY) Account can be transfer to other branches of Banks ?

PMJDY accounts are opened on Core Banking Solution platform and so the accounts can easily be transferred to any branch of the bank in any city/town as per the request of the account-holder.
